Uilleann Pipes
Glenullin
The Uilleann pipes are the national bagpipes of Ireland. Their name derives from the Irish word for “elbow,” referring to the method used by the musician to inflate the bag.
It is an extremely complex instrument requiring a high level of technical skill. In addition to the bag—held under the musician’s arm and inflated via a pumping motion—the set consists of a chanter, drones, and regulators.
The art of Uilleann piping was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. Today, there are many extraordinarily talented players worldwide, including Conrad Cushnahan, former All-Ireland champion and member of the group Glenullin. Conrad will be leading the Irish bagpipe workshop here in Verona.
