Currach - Irish vessel
Micheál Ó Maoilchiaráin
Micheál Ó Maoilchiaráin is a native Irish speaker from the Connemara Gaeltacht on Ireland’s west coast, where he grew up surrounded by the language, traditions, and maritime heritage of his local community. He is a currach builder, a nine-time All-Ireland Currach Rowing Champion, a traditional Irish sean-nós singer, and an Irish-language lecturer.
He leads community currach-building projects, bringing people together to learn about the craft, the traditions and the language connected to these boats. The latest project he was involved in was launched by the President of Ireland.
At Tocatì, Micheál will share his expertise in traditional Irish currach building and rowing, while exploring the close connections between the boats, the Irish language, and the communities in which these traditions continue to thrive.
