The Aran Sweater

Bríd has been knitting since she was a young girl, learning from her mother who was herself a master knitter. Growing up, all their clothes were handmade, with the Aran sweater (Geansaí Árann) as the centerpiece. Every stitch has a name, and each knitter often has signature stitches they incorporate into sweaters for all their family members. Years ago, the Aran wool used contained natural oils making it water-resistant—a crucial feature to keep wearers warm, especially fishermen, even when wet. At the festival, you can try your hand at this traditional art from the Aran Islands.
