S-ciànco

There is a traditional game, simple in form yet rich in history, that has crossed lands and cultures for centuries: it is the S-ciànco, also known as Lippa. A small, tapered wooden stick capable of challenging gravity, precision, and the skill of the player who throws it.

Its origins are lost in time: similar games were already played more than 4,000 years ago along the banks of the Nile, and over the centuries the S-ciànco travelled across different peoples and territories, eventually becoming a deeply rooted tradition in the Verona area, where it is still cherished and played with passion today.

The aim of the challenge is simple: to strike and throw the S-ciànco as far as possible from the Mare, a large smooth stone marking the starting point. But it is not just a test of strength: it requires precision, timing, and attention. Players must wait for the call “Vegna!”, the signal that starts the throw, respect the rhythm of the game, and face their opponent with strategy, cleverness, and quick reflexes.

The S-ciànco tests concentration, balance, and control of movement, in that delicate space between attack and defence that makes every match unique. Every throw, every strike, and every challenge tells the story of a community that keeps its heritage alive through sharing, participation, and the simple joy of playing together.
