What is more abstract and rational than a chessboard? Yet it excites us and reminds us of the
atmosphere of castles surrounded by moats full of water in defence of kings and queens. The ancestors of modern chess appeared in India in the sixth century, and arrived in Europe around 1000. Besides being the most popular strategy game in the world, chess is a democratic pastime: age, gender or social class do not count.
