S-ciànco
Associazione Giochi Antichi APS, Verona, Veneto
There is a traditional game, simple yet rich in history, that for centuries has crossed lands and cultures: S-ciànco, or Lippa, a tapered wooden stick that challenges gravity and precision. Born over 4,000 years ago along the banks of the Nile, it has traveled far to become a cherished ritual in the Verona area, where it is still played with passion today.
The heart of the challenge is simple: to throw the S-ciànco far from the Mare, a large smooth stone that marks the starting point. But it’s not just about strength: players must listen for the “Vegna!” — the signal that starts the throw — respect the timing, and face their opponent with cunning and quick reflexes.
It’s a game that calls for concentration, measured movement, and that delicate balance between offense and defense. With every throw and every strike, it continues to tell the story of a community that keeps tradition alive through sharing and play.
