Stand in a circle, hold your stick upright, and listen.
At the call of “Matau!” (right) or “Māui!” (left), players leave their stick and race to catch their neighbour’s before it falls. Miss it, and you’re out.
This game builds reflexes, timing, and coordination. It comes from the tradition of tī rākau—training games once used to build skills for warriors. Today, it brings movement, laughter, and group spirit to life.
