When deep knowledge of the tides meets the strong Brabantine horses, an exceptional alliance begins. Twice a week the fishermen of Oostduinkerke thoroughly search the coast in shallow water, bottom trawling and collecting shrimp in the baskets attached to the horses. Twelve Flemish families continue this unusual tradition that culminates in the Shrimp Festival and Shrimp Procession, with 10,000 visitors a year. This fishing method, based on a strong sense of community, has been inscribed on the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2013.
