Since the beginning of the 20th century in the Landes, stilts have been the tool for shepherds to oversee their rams even from a long way off in their flat lands.
In the 19th century, stilt walkers began to dance, adopting the music and choreography in vogue at the time. At the same time, stilt walkers get into athletic challenges: speed trials and obstacle courses. Today, some twenty Landes folk groups keep this intangible cultural, artistic and sporting heritage alive.
