Cacio al Fuso (Cheese Rolling Competition) derives from the shepherds of the Val d’Orcia’s habit of tapping on the cheese wheels to test their quality, later transformed into a playful practice to render this a convivial moment. It is an intergenerational game practiced by men and women alike: a cheese wheel is rolled by a player, in an attempt to make it come as close as possible to a wooden spindle planted in the centre of a circular field. The traditional tournament takes place at the end of summer during the Fiera del Cacio di Pienza (Pienza Cheese Festival), in Piazza Pio II, where about fifty players of the districts of the city challenge each other.
